11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, 12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever! (Psalm 30:11-12 ESV)
I had a moment last December when I was feeling the grief of a lost family member. I felt it so heavily in my soul and heart that it felt like a stone was sinking in my chest. I closed my eyes and prayed, when in the course of prayers, I suddenly felt my thoughts directed towards my friendship with God. How, no matter what happened, no matter who I lost and grieved in my life, God would always be beside me. His Holy Spirit would always reside in me. And in that moment, as I prayed, God’s peace washed over me and I felt so thankful for his presence, his friendship.
The Psalms are a beautiful reminder of what friendship with God can look like: singing, dancing, crying with joy and gladness! To explode with a thankful heart, to be near bursting with laughter and praise!
Even in a moment of true sorrow, I felt the fullness of God’s cup. God’s joy has the power to reside alongside pain, a flower nestled amongst the thorns. He can turn any sorrow, and lift any burden from a heavy heart. He truly is the greatest Friend!
