Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Psalm 34:9-11
I recently discovered Verses, a collection of songs inspired by Bible verses by different artists. The songs are all quoting the chosen verses for each song word for word. For someone who typically has difficulty memorizing passages straight up, but grew up with a choral background, these songs have helped me memorize the Word more easily. One example of this is Psalm 34:9-11. A wonderful song was created by Jonathan Ogden and Verses to this verse, and it’s gotten stuck in my head on and off for about a month.
My favorite part? Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. The double negative can be a little confusing at first, but it’s lodged itself deep in my brain. Because of faith in God, I’ll never lack the good in life.
What does this mean? What are the good things we’ll never lack if we choose to dedicate our lives to God? Maybe a better question would be, what are the fruits of the Spirit? Those things that grow out of God’s true steadfast love at work in our lives? Let’s take a look at Galatians…
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Don’t all of these sound truly lovely? When I think about these fruits of the Spirit as promises to us as we grow closer to Him, they bring a whole different meaning to the words, “Come to me, all who are burdened, and I will give you rest,” (Matthew 11:28).
Sure, being followers of Jesus doesn’t guarantee us an “easy” life. I would hazard a guess that there is no such thing for anybody here on this earth. However, we’ll never lack the good: love, joy, peace, forbearance… and rest in the fact that once rooted in faith, these will never be taken away from us. The fruits of the Spirit are forever ours!
(P.s. As a little treat to send you off into the weekend, here’s the song I mention above on Spotify:)
Looking forward to listening when I won't wake up my sleeping hubby. 🎶🎵☺️
